Ted BaselerA Message from Ted Baseler, President of Chateau Ste. Michelle

We are grateful to you for understanding the vital importance of education to the success of our state's young people.

Your support of the 2008 Chateau Ste. Michelle Diversity Scholarship Fund is an investment in the future of men and women striving to improve their lives with a university education.

At Chateau Ste. Michelle, we are committed to the belief that diversity is key to our success as a business. We also believe that an educated workforce is critical to the success of our American society. Unfortunately, higher education is often inaccessible to the families of underrepresented minority students. These deserving individuals should not be denied the opportunities for learning and discovery that are available in a university setting.

Your generous contributions to the Chateau Ste. Michelle Diversity Scholarship Fund will help to ensure that educational opportunity and the means to a better future are available to all, including those who lack the financial resources.

At this year's dinner the highlight once again will be stirring speeches by some of the recipients of these scholorships. They are talented, high-achieving students who remind us all why this is such a worthy endeavor. Here is just one testimonial:

"I am honored to be a recipient of the Chateau Ste. Michelle Diversity scholarship award. It has not only changed my financial situation but has allowed me to attend college without incurring the debt that comes with student loans. Receiving this scholarship has encouraged me to do well in my classes, and look forward to being able to give back to the community when I begin my career. Thank you for your willingness and confidence to help me achieve my goals." -Gabriel Rubio

Chateau Ste. Michelle Diversity Scholars are enormously appreciative of the opportunities you make possible through your support. In providing the means for these high-achieving students to continue their education, you help to prepare them for successful lives as community leaders and informed citizens, a gift they will repay many times over through their future contributions to our society.

Thank you for your wonderful support.

Ted Baseler
President and CEO
Chateau Ste. Michelle

You make the critical difference. Did you know…

  • Since 1991, tuition and fees have increased 78 percent at the state's public research universities, while the prices of most other consumer goods increased an average of 22 percent. Per capita income during the same time period increased 49 percent.
  • Currently 11 percent of Washington State's high school graduates are underrepresented minority students. By 2011, this figure will jump to 21 percent. As public universities prepare to respond to declining state funding and an increase in college-bound students, they will face additional challenges to ensure that minority students continue to have access to higher education.
  • Approximately 50 percent of students attending the University of Washington and 45 percent of undergraduates at Washington State University received need-based financial aid, including grants, loans, and work-study, during the 2000-2001 academic year. In addition to these sources of financial aid, most students must reduce expenses, find employment, or take out personal loans to meet their college costs. More than 80 percent of students graduating from Washington state institutes of higher education in 2000-2001 carried some form of student debt.

"I am the first from my family to attend a university. Words can't even
express what I want to say and how much this means to me.."

- Alex Vichay Bountharath

"By pursuing my goals and earning a Bachelor's Degree in Business,
I plan to set a positive example for the minority community and
demonstrate that with hard work and determination, everyone can be
successful no matter who they are or where they come from."

- Cristina Mejia

"I want to show Indian children that someone can go to school and
be educated and still be fully involved in his or her culture."

- Elese Washines

"You're making a profound difference in my life, and in those that
through my education I will be equipped to touch."

- Nicholas Koch
